About BASPCAN
Started in 1979, BASPCAN attracted a grant from the UK Department of Health in 1989 to encourage its development. This support allowed us to open our national office in York. The grant was renewed in 1992 for a further three years, allowing the association to become self-funding.
The Association was established to protect children from suffering, or likelihood of suffering, significant harm, ill-treatment, impairment of health or development by the encouragement and promotion of any methods, services and facilities calculated to safeguard and promote the welfare of such children. It aims to educate and inform the public at large, and in particular those persons professionally qualified in relevant fields, in all aspects and effects of abuse and neglect on children generally. We do this by multi-disciplinary collaboration and education.
A prime objective of the Association is to provide high quality and up to date training for our members in a variety of ways. National and Regional Conferences, Study Days, Seminars and Professional Discussions are held throughout the year, and a National Congress is held every three years. This event attracts an international audience. Members receive special reduced rates for all BASPCAN events.
Membership applications are invited from all with an interest in, or working in the field of child protection. Members are drawn from the fields of social work, medicine, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, legal and law enforcement agencies, probation, and education and academia, as well as related welfare and voluntary groups throughout the world.
Local branches operate around the UK, where members meet to exchange views, opinions, and research experiences. Many of these local events are either free or at a nominal cost to members.
