Started in 1979, BASPCAN attracted a grant from the UK Department of Health in 1989 to encourage its development. This support was renewed in 1992 for a further three years, during which time a national office was established. The association is now self-funding.

Membership is open to all with an interest in, or working in the field of child protection. Members are drawn from social work, medicine, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, legal and law enforcement agencies, probation, and education and academic fields, as well as related welfare and voluntary groups through out the world.

Activities include national and regional study days, conferences, seminars and discussions, and a large international congress every three years. Members receive special reduced rates for all BASPCAN events.

Local branches operate around the UK, where members meet to exchange views, opinions, and research experiences. Many of these local events are either free or at a nominal cost to members.
