A collaborative event with BASPCAN and Jessica Kingsley Publishers to launch the publication of the book ‘The Child’s World: Good Assessment Practice’ in late 2018, authors Emeritus Professor Jan Horwath and Dr Dendy Platt.

Keynote Speakers: Emeritus Professor Jan Horwath, Dr Dendy Platt, Dr Aideen Naughton, Professor Jane Barlow, Professor Simon Hackett, Dr Peter Sidebotham and Charlie Orrell

We are announcing an additional speaker at the launch of The Child’s World who will pay tribute to Ruth Marchant (Triangle) who wrote the chapter Making Assessment Work for Children with Complex Needs and who sadly died last year. Ruth wrote: If children’s needs are properly met, are those needs still complex? Complexity can be a measure of the competence of services as much as a judgement about a child’s needs, and where a child’s needs are skilfully assessed and met they may no longer be seen as complex.

Although assessment is recognised to be the foundation of effective practice,  the assessment of children in need and those requiring early help has become ever more formulaic as practitioners struggle to cope with the pressures of work.  To assist in achieving more meaningful assessments The Child’s World: the Essential Guide to Assessing Vulnerable Children and their Families has been substantially revised, updated and extended and will be launched at this conference.  A fundamental aim of the book is to act as a “go to” for busy practitioners assisting them to complete child-centred assessments.

This third edition is now relevant to multi-disciplinary audiences throughout the UK and is up to date with policy, including the English Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018, and recent research developments. Many new chapters have been added to deal with types of harm which pose particular challenges for assessment practice. The conference provides an opportunity to hear from authors of several chapters who will provide an overview of the latest developments as well as considering ways of applying learning to practice in these challenging times.

All delegates will receive a signed free copy of the book ‘The Child’s World: Good Assessment Practice’, retail value £26.99.
