The Therapeutic Challenge of Working with Complex Child Maltreatment cases associated with Developmental Trauma

The BASPCAN and Child and Family Training series of practice workshops

Thursday 8 November 2018

Training Venue: The Institute of Family Therapy, 24–32 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HX

Speakers: Dr Arnon Bentovim and Carol Jolliffe
10.00 – 16.00

This is a one -day, intensive knowledge and skills-based training course designed for practitioners and clinicians working with complex multi-type maltreatment/poly-victimisation i.e. with children who have experienced more than one type of abuse or neglect, which is now seen to be the rule rather than the exception;  neglected children may be  vulnerable to sexual exploitation; sexually abused children in the family context may be exposed to domestic violence and physical abuse; emotionally abused children may be vulnerable to physical abuse and neglect.

Negative prolonged criticism of a child in addition to harsh parenting has a profound impact on a child’s sense of self.  When these observations are linked to additional Adverse Childhood Experiences, (ACEs) eg parental loss, separations, and exposure to violence, mental health and substance abuse, the impact on the child’s health and development is cumulative.

There is a linear relationship between Complex Multi-part Maltreatment and the child’s Emotional and Disruptive Responses, with high levels of Distress and Traumatic Symptoms.

These responses overlap and can be characterised as Developmental Trauma.

  • Participants will receive 3 Guides (Value £75) as part of their cost of the workshop, ‘Engagement and Goal Setting with Children and Families’,
Working with Children and Young People, Emotional and Traumatic Responses’, and ‘Working to Modify Abusive and Neglectful Parenting’
